Convert manual switched front door lights to motion detection lights?
I have been thinking about installing a traditional twin flood lamp motion detection light. However, I thought it would be even better to add motion detection capabilities to control all my existing front door lights. Basically, I want a motion sensor to trigger all the lights to turn on at the same time. This includes wall and pedestal lights. I believe all these lights currently draw 500 watts.
What is the best way to approach this project? I have looked at this: http://www.amazon.com/Heath-Zenith-SL-6053-WH-Wireless-Dual-Brite/dp/B001B5QYDU. However, I think the wattage is insufficient.
The simplest way is probably for you to use the signal from the motion detector to drive a relay that turns on all the other lights. The relay has two parts, the energizing coil (which is what's driven by your motion detector) and the switch itself. You'll want to make sure that the coil load is small enough to be driven by the sensor. So pick a relay that pulls less than the lights that are driven by the sensor and you should be fine. The switch needs to be rated high enough to handle the current for all your lights (which at 500W is probably about 5 Amps, I'd go for 15 to be safe though).
