how did my glass cup break with my glass counter top table at the same time?
Last night I heard something crack and thought nothing of it. This morning I come down stairs and see my glass heavy cup shattered and only the base is in-tacked and my glass counter top table has a huge star break in it. Please help me explain how this happened!! I have 2 cats and there is no way they have enough strength to drop the cup on the glass table to make that much damage.
Sounds totally bizarre!
If it wasn't caused by dropping, then the only other things I can think of would be thermal expansion, "glass fatigue", or high frequency sound.
Did you leave a hot drink in your cup? Or could the cup have received heat from another source?
Glass fatigue is another possibility. Over time stresses build up within the glass due to heating/cooling cycles and eventually the stresses cause a sudden failure. A heavy glass cup could generate sufficient forces to crack the glass table as well, especially if it was stressed as well.
Shattering due to high freqeuncy resonance is very unlikely.
