I got 1.6 meters for the first problem too, but isn't that a bit short for a refridgerator? Maybe it's one of those teeny ones. Hmm...
1)Energy is conserved. final kinetic energy is equal to initial potential energy.
K=V=mgh=85.5 g=9.8 m=5.45 h=85.5/9.8/5.45
=1.6 meters
2)here, initial kinetic energy is equal to final potential energy if you take larry bird's height to be at 0 potential energy.
then, K=V=mgh=5.4 g=9.8 m=.6 h=5.4/9.8/.6=.92m
height from bird to hoop=3.4-2.15=1.25 m
his shot will not make it.
