wood filler big job - what product to buy?
I have just bought an expensive sideboard that was on display. very heavy very sturdy. only only prob is that it has a slight bit of damage. the top of the wood has split off inside corner, the top has been lost so cannot be glued back on. Just above where the screw goes in. It reveals a nasty chipboard hole. it is light oak veneer unit. now what I want to know is what filler do i buy (if thats the right product for the job) and what brand is recommended. I am in uk so something thats available over here please!
I might inquire around about a cabinet/furniture repair person that might help you.
Any of the commercial fillers will probably give you a satisfactory repair, but not a satisfactory appearance.
Not totally appreciating where the damage is, I might opt for filling in the damage & gluing on a new sheet of veneer & edging. I have used both solvent & water based wood fillers, as well as epoxy type filler material and find the epoxy materials a better solution for large voids.
They make veneer sheets for repairs, such as this, a well as for making DIY furniture where cost i a concern.
