I have a desk style sewing machine cabinet and I can't figure out how to open it to use the sewing machine.?
I was given a used singer sewing machine and it is installed inside a beautiful maple desk style cabinet. I can't figure out how to set it up to use the sewing machine. I pulled the top panel off and set it aside, I folded the front panel out and down and then folded the second top piece down but when I pull the sewing machine up and out, it will not stay up and I can't figure out how to brace it. I have 3 other sewing machine cabinets that I use so I'm not a complete dork but I am really getting frustrated here.

This looks just like it. So I must be doing something wrong because I set it up like they have done in this picture but it does not seem very sturdy plus there is a huge gap between the sewing machine and the left side of the opening.
EDITED TO ADD: That maple desk machine (second photo of the URL) is sitting on a recessed platform. Sounds like the machine you have isn't a good fit for it, and maybe the recessed area has been damaged. Someone with some basic woodworking skills could probably make it work fairly easily -- and cut a new insert so you don't have that gap.

Is the machine attached to the case in any way?
Typically, you open the front panel and swing it to the left, and lay the "lid" on top of that to form a surface to support the fabric. Then you swing a top cutout to the front, lift the machine (which is hinged on the back) and drop the top cutout, and then swing the machine down.
I'm sort of thinking this might be on a riser platform of some sort, like kitchen mixers used to pop out of cabinets in the 50s. If the gas springs are shot, then it won't hold.
