King Henry the VIII's mother was Elizabeth of York, married to Henry the VII. Henry the VIII's daughter was Elizabeth I.
The Queen's mother today, was married to King George VI. Her name was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon also known as "The Queen Mum" before her death. They had Elizabeth II who is the queen today. With all those women named Elizabeth being married to Kings, why is today's Queen known as Elizabeth II and not the IV?
Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II are (were) Queens who rule(d) in their own right. (Called Queens Regnant.)
Wives of Kings are called Queens Consort, and there have been only three Elizabeths:
Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV
Elizabeth of York, wife of Henry VII
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, wife of George VI
If, in the future, King William has only a daughter and names her Elizabeth, when she succeeds to the throne she'll probably be called Elizabeth III. If King William marries an Elizabeth, she would be his Queen Consort without a number!
