At night in my bedroom i hear a sort of clicking noise. what could it be?
The noise sort of sounds like the ticking of an alarm clock, though not regularly times like one. It also stops and starts. It creeps me out so much! It started about a month ago, never heard it before then. My room is next to the airing cupboard, but seems to come from the other end so i don't think its anything to do with the water system. Where i think it comes from has a bookcase and a radiator by it, perhaps somthing to do with the radiator? could it be some sort of animal or insect? (btw live in England) or could it be from within the walls?

The metal of the radiator expands and contracts until it reaches a temperature that is close to the temperature of the heat it is emitting. The expanding/contracting causes a clicking noise just like you describe and the clicking stops and starts based on ambient temperature.
You probably started using it a month or so ago and that's why you are noticing it now. Nothing to be frightened of.
You can prove this to yourself by not turning on the heat/radiator. There will be no clicking.
