we have cheap, white cabinets in our new house. Any ideas on how i can make them look more like antique white?
The easiest way is to glaze them. If they are laminate, you will have to degloss them either with steel wool and fine grit sandpaper or using Paseo deglosser so that the glaze will stick. You can make your own glaze by using 1/3 acrylic or latex paint, 1/3 water and 1/3 Floetrol. Play with the ratios and test on a sample board first so that you get the color just the way you want it. Burnt umber and burnt sienna both work to antique the appearance depending on the look you are after.
Apply the glaze with a soft cloth, t-shirts are great for this. Have another soft cloth dampened so that you can manipulate the color into areas that would normally receive wear, like in crevaces or where a drawer pull or cabinet would be openend. The glaze gives you more open working time than using straight paint so you can add or subtract color with your dampened rag or by layering the color.
Then, use a clear, non-yellowing, UVA/UVB protecting polyurethane like Varathane to seal it, make it easier to clean and protect your work.
